Portsmouth Hospital Reopens A&E After Power Outage

Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth has reopened its emergency department after it was closed to new admissions due to a power outage that led to the declaration of a major incident.

The outage occurred on Monday morning, affecting parts of the hospital and disrupting phone lines. A few procedures were cancelled as a result. However, power has now been restored to most of the site, allowing the hospital to reopen its A&E department. The incident has been downgraded from a major to an internal critical event.

Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust advised that some delays are expected as services resume normal operations, asking for patience and understanding from patients and visitors. Phone lines and card readers in the hospital’s car parks are still facing issues, and parking payments for Monday have been suspended. Visitors are welcome to attend the hospital as usual.

An investigation into the cause of the power failure is underway. Earlier, the trust posted on X (formerly Twitter), informing the public about the power loss and advising patients with serious medical conditions to contact NHS 111 or 999 rather than visit the emergency department at Queen Alexandra Hospital.
