The employee, based in Ireland, was dismissed after failing to reply to Elon Musk’s unusual email ultimatum, which urged workers to be “extremely hardcore” or resign. Now, Twitter is required to pay him €550,000 in compensation, the largest unfair dismissal award in Irish history.

Rooney, who had been with the company since 2013, was informed on November 18 that he was considered to have resigned, and his access to Twitter’s systems was deactivated.

A week later, he emailed Twitter stating, “At no point have I indicated to Twitter that I am resigning, nor have I seen or accepted any separation agreement.” Twitter argued, unsuccessfully, that Rooney’s failure to click “yes” in response to the email implied he had voluntarily resigned.
